Basin Electric and PRECorp donate $10,000 to local organizations

Concern for community is one of the seven cooperative principles that Basin Electric and its members follow. One way the cooperative is able to give back is through its matching donation program.

Basin Electric recently partnered with Class C member Powder River Energy Corporation (PRECorp), headquartered in Sundance, Wyoming, on two donations to support their surrounding community. 

Edible Prairie Project

A non-profit located in Campbell County, the Edible Prairie Project works to get food that is grown and produced by local farmers and ranchers into the hands of the children and families that need it most. It’s their mission to cultivate a fair, resilient, and community food system that promotes thriving rural communities.

Basin Electric and the PRECorp Foundation joined together to donate $5,000 for Edible Prairie Project’s “Grown on the Prairie” fundraising event. Money raised during the event will help fund the organization’s many programs, including:

• A Summer Weekend Meals for Kids program that provides kid-friendly and nutritious weekend food packages to children each weekend during the summer break, and makes sure kids have fresh, local veggie options to choose from.
• Gillette Little Free Pantries, a network of upcycled newspaper dispensers placed at city parks containing food and personal care items that any member of the community can access at any time.
• Multi-farm veggie baskets that bring locally-grown produce to everyone through their innovative “pay-what-you-can” pricing structure.
• Free garden kits for families in need that would like to grow their own edible garden at home.
• Gleaned produce collection from local farmers’ fields that is donated to local food banks.
• Working with local social service agencies to plant edible gardens for their clients to enjoy.

Imagination Library of Campbell County

The library is a local chapter of the international Dolly Parton Imagination Library program. A non-profit, the program helps children succeed and communities prosper by providing free age-appropriate books to every child, ages birth through five years old, who are registered in the program. This is only the second Imagination Library in the state of Wyoming, with the other one in Sheridan County.

Together, Basin Electric and the PRECorp Foundation donated $5,000 to help fund the launching of the new library. So far, the chapter has secured funding for the first year, and this donation will help provide funding for the following year.
