Each year, Basin Electric hosts thousands of visitors at our facilities to educate them about how energy is made and our role in providing energy to our member cooperatives.

Tours are available at most of our facilities Tuesday-Thursday between 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Central Time.

COVID-19 restrictions may apply.

Important updates to our tour program

Basin Electric no longer provides lunches.

  • Caterers in the Beulah/Hazen, North Dakota area who will deliver to the plant site:
    • Kimi’s Catering, contractor operating out of the Synfuels Plant: 701-891-1709
    • Bronson’s Marketplace, Beulah: 701-873-5293
  • We can also suggest Bismarck restaurants who will prepare box lunches for your trip.

The Synfuels Plant no longer has a full-time, on-site tour guide.

We will always accommodate member tours; however, individuals and families wishing to visit the Synfuels Plant will be asked to visit on days larger groups are already scheduled to be there in order to make best use of limited staff resources.

Tours at Antelope Valley Station power plant and the coal mine will be scheduled as they have in the past with one exception: power plant tours will not be scheduled on the first two business days of each month due to limited staff availability.

Security guidelines

We have adopted security guidelines for international and domestic tour guests at all of our facilities.

  • International tour visitors are required to submit a Foreign/National On-Site Tour Request 30 days prior to their planned visit. This allows time to process the necessary information and to satisfy the procedures set in place.

Requirements of tour participants

To be able to fully participate in these tours, your tour guests should be able to:

  • Stand for up to 30 minutes in the Great Plains Synfuels Plant & Antelope Valley Station model rooms.
  • Navigate stairs and steel grating without canes, walkers, crutches, walking boots, or any other aide that may be a tripping hazard.
  • Withstand temperatures in excess of 100 degrees for up to 10 minutes.
  • Ride in bumpy, off-road conditions for up to 90 minutes.
  • Wear closed-toe shoes (no flip-flops or high heels).

Tour guests who cannot fully participate will be given opportunities to stay behind in a seating area.
